Preserving berries: some tips & tricks for storing them

Berries are really and truly delicious vitamin and mineral bombs. But they are also very fragile and must be handled carefully. Find out here how to store your berries so that they remain fresh for as long as possible.

Storing berries: the right preparation

First of all, remove any damaged fruit. Otherwise, they can cause other berries around them to deteriorate quicker. Line a clean and dry container with fresh kitchen paper and place the berries in it, leaving a small gap between each berry. Leave the container open or cover loosely with a lid and place in the vegetable drawer of your fridge. Replace the kitchen paper as soon as it gets damp. The berries will generally keep for between two and five days when stored this way.

Keep your berries fresh for longer

Strong pressure or too much water can damage berries, causing them to rot or to lose their flavour. They should therefore only be washed, very carefully, shortly before you eat them and not before you store them. Similarly, only remove strawberry hulls, leaves or stalks shortly before eating.

Freezing berries is also an option

If you want to keep large quantities of berries from spoiling you can also freeze them. They will keep for around six months if stored in this way. This is a particularly good option for blueberries as their robust skin means that they lose very little of their texture. Here’s what to do: Place the washed, individual berries on a large plate and put the plate into the freezer for two hours. This will prevent the berries from sticking together too easily and makes it easier to take them out later in small portions. Afterwards, you can put them in a bag or a sealable container and freeze them further. Before eating, first leave the berries in the fridge and then let them thaw out gently at room temperature.

Tip: You can of course also freeze strawberries, raspberries and other types of berries. While they are somewhat softer after thawing, they still taste delicious in muesli or when added to other dishes.
