Five reasons why you should eat pomegranates

Five reasons why you should eat pomegranates

Have you ever asked yourself why pomegranates are so popular at the moment and why they have been making a real comeback in the fruit bowl for some time now? There are actually several good reasons for this. Never tried one? Read on to find out why now is definitely the time for you to eat this seeded red fruit from the pomegranate tree.

Juicy fruit with healthy contents

Pomegranates contain phytochemicals, like polyphenols and flavonoids, whose antioxidant properties make them very beneficial to our health. Eating pomegranates regularly can assist in the absorption of vitamins C and K. They also help the body to absorb potassium, a mineral that is instrumental in ensuring a well-functioning nervous system.

A great all-rounder for many recipes

Originating in Persia, the pomegranate has a sweet and sour taste and is a great choice for many recipes. The deep-red seeds can be enjoyed on their own or used to enhance salads, smoothies, muesli and yoghurt. Freshly squeezed pomegranate juice is a healthy drink. For a tasty Middle Eastern-style dish, add pomegranate seeds to couscous.

Pomegranate seeds can be easily removed

If you have been put off enjoying pomegranates by the complicated job of removing the seeds, we recommend the following tip: roll the pomegranate over and back on a table and knead it until it is nice and soft. Now cut it in half and, using a spoon, knock out the seeds. Alternatively, the seeds can also be removed from pomegranates by submerging them in a large bowl of water. Using this method means you don't get splashed with juice. By the way, only the pomegranate seeds are actually tasty. The fruit flesh itself has a very bitter flavour.

Limited season for pomegranates

Pomegranates are available in our supermarkets mainly in autumn and winter. The fruit is in season here from September to the start of February. In certain fruit departments you will even find the seeds packed and ready to eat. So if you like pomegranates, make the most of the season and enjoy this delicious fruit soon.

A more effective painkiller

A recent study conducted by scientists from Mexico, Italy and Spain examined the anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects of pomegranates. These beneficial properties are probably due to the fruit's high polyphenol content. The pomegranate extract used in the study outperformed even the effect of common painkillers like Diclofenac.

Discover how beneficial pomegranates are to a healthy diet and try this fantastic fruit tomorrow as a crunchy and juicy topping for your muesli!

Enjoy the taste and sending you our fruity wishes!
